Scott opened the meeting with a prayer. Scott called for an approval of the minutes. Terri Brown motioned, and the minutes were approved.
Karen Rusche gave the Principal’s report:
1. There will be information regarding the new uniform policy in the Lowdown. The weather has been hot so it has not been enforced.
2. Terra Nova and In-View tests begin here in October for grades 2, 4, 6, and 8.
3. Craig Maliborski in-serviced many of the faculty on the uses of the Smartboards. Some staff members are going to St. Susanna School for further inservice. Paula Metz is instructing the faculty about the software from the company titled Option C. The plan is to print report cards online.
4. This weekend is Catechetical Sunday, and the theme is “Encountering the Living Christ”.
5. On September 19, 7:30 p.m. in church, we will have the Confirmation Parent Night.
6. On October 2, 7:30 p.m. the 1st Reconciliation Parent Night will take place in church.
7. On October 2, the seventh graders will be at Camp Joy for an all day leadership/team building day.
8. The Archdiocese is now providing a Student Accident Insurance. It covers enrolled students from preschool to senior high school. This includes volunteers, faculty, administration, and other school employees. Benefits are payable to the applicable maximum of covered expenses that are not recoverable from another plan providing Accident Medical Expense Benefits. It even provides for field trips. The purpose of this coverage is:
a. No medical coverage in the Archdiocese Self Insured liability policies for students.
b. Student Accident benefits pay deductibles and coinsurance of primary private
insurance and, therefore, avoids an adversarial potential between school and
student/parents, i.e. Avoid Litigation Costs.
c. Pays any covered medical expense even if no primary/private medical
policy is available.
9. The premiums for the Student Accident Insurance will be covered in fiscal
year 2007-2008 by the Archdiocesan Insurance Property and Liability Plan. In fiscal year 2008-2009, the premiums for the Student Accident Insurance will be included in the Property & Liability billing for each school from the Archdiocese. The cost for elementary schools will be $4 per student and $6.50 for high schools.
Brochures and Claim forms are available on the Archdiocese of Cincinnati website.
Karen talked about the problems with Cincinnati Public School Buses.
Terri Brown asked why school needed to start in August when it is so hot. Karen stated we cannot change the school calendar because the bus schedule was already established. Scott Liesch, also, questioned the school calendar, and thought we could seek faculty input.
Scott moved to discuss the issues at hand. Terri Brown talked about getting a copy of the volunteerism policy from St. Patrick’s. It was stated that we needed a member of the PMT to be a part of the sub-committee on volunteerism. Amy Osterfeld offered to be a member.
Karen Rusche talked about the costs of marketing the school in the local media outlets. She stated financing the marketing was a problem. Scott asked for volunteers for a marketing committee. Nancy asked if the group could come from a group of volunteers in the parish as opposed to just the Commission. Scott stated we needed a quicker way to form a group. Scott and Angela offered to look at this, and Scott said he would ask Craig to be a part of this.
The topic of a preschool at OLL was discussed and thought it was best if individuals researched the requirements through area preschools. We could look at having an “outside” source running the preschool on our campus. It was suggested that we could have area preschools present to the Commission on what is involved. Terri Brown offered to do this in the second half of the year.
The topic of revising the Discipline Policy was addressed. Ed, Nancy, and Lynda will meet to revise the policy then present to a panel of teachers.
There will be future meeting topics regarding calendar changes and lunch issues.
Terri Brown will submit the update for members and terms for the Commission on the website.
Karen then distributed a handout “Assistance for Non-Public School Pupils Provided by Leading States”. Ohio is one of the leaders. It was mentioned we needed to continue to contact our state leaders to thank them and to remind them to continue to support our needs. The Commission then went to the computer lab to watch a DVD titled “What’s Happening in Ohio”. Karen stated we will need to re-visit the Ed Choice Voucher Program at a future meeting.
The meeting was adjourned, and there was a closing prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Julie Balzano
