Education Commission Meeting Minutes

                                                                           March 8, 2007

Attendance:  Sue Kampel, Terry Rabanus, Terri Brown, Ed Woelfel, Julie Balzano,

Lynn Breidenstein, Jim Frede, Mary Jo Meyer, Connie Smith, Lynda

                       Sexton, and Amy Osterfeld

Terri Brown opened the meeting with a prayer and an approval of the minutes.

Terri Brown suggested we keep a running “action item” list at the end of the minutes, so we know what items we have discussed during a meeting and what action needs to be taken.  (i.e.:  School Uniform Policy being distributed with final report cards.)

Principal’s Report:  Karen Rusche was not present; the report was read by Julie Balzano.

1.  This week there was a drill for a Shelter in Place for chemical spills and for an

Intruder Lockdown Procedure.  These are now mandated by the State.

2.  We have purchased three walkie talkies to be used by teachers on the playgrounds and

for an Intruder Lockdown.  We received a $450 grant, and a family is donating the re-

maining amount to pay for them.

3.  Our Accreditation Evaluation is complete and will be sent to the Catholic Conference

     of Ohio for approval.

4.  We have 32 registered for Kindergarten, 5 for first grade, and 1 for fourth grade.

5.  We are ordering four more Smart Boards with Auxiliary Service funding and another

laptop with Title II D funds.

6.  St. Ann’s Parish is hosting a meeting pertaining to Regional Schools on March 22.

7.  The students will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on

March 14.

8.  On March 19, the faculty will participate with schools in the St. Lawrence Deanery

in a religious inservice with Matthew Kelly.

Terri Brown asked Sue Kampel to report for the sub-committee about the Uniform Policy.  It was decided there will not be points given for untucked shirts, but another disciplinary action will be taken.  The length of girls’ skirts was discussed and decided there should be a reminder letter sent home at the end of the school year.  There was further discussion about the policy, but there will be no vote until more members of the sub-committee are present.

The sub-committee concerning the Tuition Policy is Terri Brown, Sue Kampel, Scott Liesch, Jim Frede, Joe Lovell, and Bill Maly.  Terri Brown distributed a “Kindergarten Form” to be reviewed as a possible Statement of Commitment Form.  Since another Statement of Commitment Form would take some time to develop, this form would be signed each year with registration until a revised form is adopted.

Terri Brown referred to the Parish Membership/School Admission Policy.  This was discussed along with the Expulsion Policy.  Terry Rabanus suggested we take the Statement of Commitment form home and compare to the Tuition/School Admission Policy.  Terri Brown stated we should form a sub-committee to write a Commitment Statement with collaboration from the Finance Committee before it is submitted to the PMT.

Terri Brown referred to a past meeting when the matter of a “Teacher Evaluation Form” was discussed.  We agreed the wording needed to be understood by everyone.  We are looking for a

concensus on opinion rather than specifics.  Terri Brown mentioned the Feedback 360 used by several businesses.  Terri Brown stated she would ask Karen Rusche about the form and call Pat Armstrong at the Catholic Schools Office to ask about other schools’ surveys/teacher evaluation forms.

Terri Brown mentioned that some board members terms are expiring, and we should be asking prospective participants to submit names by the next meeting.

Connie Smith asked who was in charge of hot lunches.  It was stated that Ways and Means does this, and she should contact Debbie Goodwin.  McDonalds would like to participate in our hot lunch program because of their involvement with First in Math.  Connie also stated that Mariele Fluegeman qualified for the State Geographic Bee.

Action items:

  1. School Uniform Policy, with emphasis on length of girls’ skirts, to be sent home with final report cards and school supplies for the following school year.  Need to vote on revised School Uniform Policy.
  2. Form a sub-committee with Finance Committee to write a Statement of Commitment Form.
  3. Terri Brown to discuss teacher evaluation/survey forms with Karen Rusche and Pat Armstrong.

                                                    Respectfully submitted,

                                                    Julie Balzano
