Are We Ready for Joy?
Advent is a time to ask ourselves if we are ready to receive the Lord.  This weekend’s readings suggest that we might ask if we are ready for joy.
The prophet Isaiah paints a glorious picture when he says: “Those whom the Lord has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing and crowned with everlasting joy: they will meet with joy and gladness; sorrow and mourning will flee.”
In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells John’s disciples to report to him: “Go tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.  And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”  Jesus asks John’s disciple to alert John to the fact that the messianic time has arrived, so it is time to rejoice.
Today is traditionally called Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday.  We do not rejoice because Advent is half over.  We rejoice because the Lord is near, even in our midst.  Consider what keeps you from feeling and projecting the joy that Christ’s presence with us should bring.  Set this aside and receive the Lord into your life so you may live in joy.  As you examine your conscience, you may want to take time to go to confession.  The sacrament is celebrated here at Lourdes on Saturday from 2 to 3:30 pm.
Too often we allow the difficulties of life to burden our spirits and press down our sense of joy.  If we truly let the Lord into our hearts, how can we not be joyful?
It is time to pay attention to what images and words we allow to shape our lives.  The Lord is near.  Rejoice.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s Giving Tree effort.  You made a difference in many peoples’ lives.
Have a blessed week!
