Feast of the Epiphany

The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord

Happy New Year!

Today’s scripture readings are excellent reminders that we encounter God in a variety of people, places, circumstances, and situations. St. Paul writes to the Ephesians explicitly about how both Jews and Gentiles are welcome in God’s kingdom. He writes, “The Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”  These words of welcome and inclusivity guide us to remember that all people bear God’s image.

The magi travel to meet the baby Jesus, the newborn king, Savior and Lord. They were outsiders. They came from a different culture with different beliefs and customs. The magi warmly interact with Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. God transcends their differences.

The Feast of the Epiphany is also a prime example of how God is present and active in nature. The magi discover God’s presence in the beauty and wonder of a star. In the dark of night, God guides them. If the magi were not attuned to nature, they would not have found the Christ Child.

May we, like the magi, be willing to see God present in all people, places, and things.

I pray that the new year (2022) will bring wonderful opportunities to discover God in our lives.

Have a blessed week and peace-filled New Year! Fr. Len
