The story of the Magi’s seeking, and finding is a frame for today’s feast – the celebration of God’s selfrevelation.  St. Augustine reflected on how human nature was created with a thirst for the divine.  He wrote: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.”  The Magi were people gifted with a grace of holy restlessness.  They were well to do enough to take a long journey and arrive with expensive gifts.  They were people with an interior freedom that enabled them to respond to the Spirit who urged them to look for more than they already had and knew.

This feast is a unique celebration of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.  It draws our attention to their life together and their role as a model religious family, the domestic church.  Jesus was born into a loving family.  He was protected, nurtured and taught by loving parents.  He, like other children, caused his parents frustration and fear.  He shared their hope and joy.  Pope Francis in his homily for this feast in 2015 said, “Let us not lose confidence in the family!  It is beautiful when we can always open our hearts to one another and hide nothing.  Where there is love, there is also understanding and forgiveness.”
