Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
The challenge to the people in today’s Gospel passage from St. John is to recognize Jesus as the revelation of God’s word. There is a movement to another level of understanding of what Jesus means by “bread” – from material bread to bread that is the work of faith, and now to the bread that is Jesus himself. When the people in the scriptures come to Jesus and accept the wisdom of His teaching, His words become the source of life for them. Jesus sets before the people a feast that will nourish them for eternal life.
We also learn today about the struggle of some to believe him because they know where he comes from. They know his parents. It seems that they have closed their ears and hearts. They are not ready for a surprising God, for a God who can be present in the dull and the ordinary. Recall the early words of St. John’s Gospel – Jesus is the Word who was with God and was God from the beginning, who came from the place close to the Father’s heart to make God known to all of humanity.
Jesus’ mission which is a consequence of God’s love will lead Him into His death and resurrection for the life of the world. Within Jesus, who walked the roads of human life, we find the true presence of the living God in the Eucharist, the bread of life. May we have the eyes and heart to see. Our God longs for a relationship with us.
How do you experience the Eucharist as food that nourishes and strengthens you on your journey of life?
Have a blessed week! Fr. Len
