Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, Jesus extols the spirit of selfless service and disciples are called to imitate him. He knew what was in the hearts of James and John. He had watched their ambition and their competitiveness with Peter. He realized how their self-interest and pride had tainted their ability to love their neighbor as he called them.
Only in imitating the servanthood of Christ do we experience the true depth of our faith; only in embracing his compassion and humility in our lives do we enable the Spirit of God to renew and transform our world.
We have watched medical professionals as they provided life-giving care throughout the pandemic. These individuals have put themselves and their skills at the selfless service of others. In addition to the medical professions, there are many others who have put themselves at the service of others. In each case these people realize selfless service and the importance of caring for their neighbor.
The path to Jesus’ glory lies in the shadow of the cross. This is true not only for him, but also for those who choose to follow him. This is the way of the Son of Man who “did not come to be served but to serve and give his life for the ransom of many.”
Who is the model of Christian servanthood in your life?
