"Stay Awake" - First Sunday of Advent
First Sunday of Advent
This weekend begins the Season of Advent. We enter it with hope of a new beginning and dare to dream. The season opens with the words: Be Watchful! Or also translated as: Stay Awake!
Advent is a time of love. It is a reminder that our human nature is frail. In today’s second reading, St. Paul boldly reminds us that this is what our hope is: “You are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you firm to the end…God is faithful; by him you were called into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The scriptures on the Sundays of Advent assure us of the mercy of God. A God who is with us amid all our struggles. This is especially true today. We are assisted by God with the everyday challenges during the Advent journey of life. Jesus speaks of waiting, watchfulness, readiness, and His care. Jesus calls us to acknowledge our responsibilities in the present time as we dare to look forward to the promise of the future. We are called in this season to ‘stay awake’ and not sleep through the opportunity’s life gives us to discover God in the love of others. Notice the wonderful gifts of God.
How do you notice the movement of God in your life? Are you alert to this movement in difficult times? During Advent, I urge you to take time to notice.
Have a blessed Advent! Fr. Len
