Twenty – First Sunday in Ordinary Time
There are times when we may have felt like walking away. As we listen to the Gospel from St. John, the time for a decision has come for the people who are following and listening to Jesus. They have been nourished at the table of the Hebrew word. They are not fully prepared to accept any new spiritual food.
Jesus will not conform to the expectations of individuals who want to judge him according to their own superficial experiences. He took flesh to speak Words of Spirit and Life in a way no one else could.
Today’s psalm directs our attention to the Eucharist, “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” Not only does Jesus wish to nourish us with his Body and Blood in the Eucharist, but also with the words of truth he speaks to all who would listen.
Jesus asks those who are still with him one of the most moving questions to his disciples: “Do you also want to leave me?” Someone explicitly accepts Jesus. It is Simon Peter who answers, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
In the Gospel we hear of many disciples returning to their ‘former way of life’ after being shocked by Jesus’ words. Which of Jesus’s teachings is difficult for you to follow faithfully?
Join me in prayer for the OLL 8th Class of 2020. They join us at the 11 am Mass. Pray for them as they begin their sophomore year. Also pray for the students, faculty and staff who are returning to in person learning.
Have a blessed week! Fr. Len
